10 Of The Best Lightbox Scripts
More and more sites you visit seem to have some kind of lightbox script displaying a multitude of elements, images, videos, ajax inline content and external and internal webpages.
For those of you who may be unsure what a “lightbox” is, basically it is a script that allows you display large images using various modal dialogues utilizing libraries such as Prototype, MooTools and jQuery.
Recently a client of mine requested a lightbox gallery, and whilst searching the far corners of the web for a suitable script, I found an arsenal of lightboxes that deserve a mention.
The listed scripts are in grouped by the library it uses, the objects will be listed for each.
jQuery
Colorbox can handle multiple items, including images, video, ajax inline content, grouped images, iframe and image preloading.

Pirobox is a project from PiroLab and uses jQuery. Pirobox is used for single or multiple images only.

FancyBox can be used for images, grouped images, inline content as well as iframes.

Thickbox handles inline, iframe, images and multiple images, its build on the jQuery library.

Mootools
LiteBox is a super small script which is used for images and multiple images only.

Milkbox handles Flash, images, multiple images and XML based gallery definitions.

Slimbox at present only will handle images and multiple images.

Prototype
Leightbox is an option for inline content only, images are not supported with this lightbox.

LightBox2 is an image only lightbox, but it does handle multiple images for use with galleries.

ModalBox is only used for ajax content at present.

By no means is this list a fully comprehensive overview of the available lightboxes on the web, merely a selected few by myself that I have toyed around with and used in projects, and hopefully a few you these may come in useful for other projects in the future.
